About Weihenstephan Brewery

Over the centuries, much has changed in the world, and the future lives on change. Nice that in the eventful past of Weihenstephan with all its developments, achievements and setbacks has also remained somewhat constant: Our beer. And so the former monastic brewery Weihenstephan still exists today, after almost 1000 years: quality, tradition and self-confidence as the oldest existing brewery in the world.

Even if you can hardly believe it: There was a time when no beer was brewed in Weihenstephan.
However, at that time Charlemagne was not even born, the Crusades still a dream of the future, and where Munich is today, only a few cows were in pasture at that time.

Embark on the journey to the origin of the beer with our timeline and experience the eventful history of the brewery Weihenstephan.

About Weihenstephan Brewery

Almost a thousand years ago the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan was the monastery brewery of the Benedictine monks. Then, the Royal Bavarian State Brewery, it is now operating as a state directed enterprise under the control of the Bavarian Government. As the oldest still existing brewery in the world it stands upon the Weihenstephan hill, surrounded by the comparatively very young Weihenstephan science center of the Technical University of Munich. And so, a unique tradition and brewing culture developed over the centuries. Today, Korbinian’s heirs use the most modern technology, but they never forget their own history and their own high standards. This allowes us to brew a variety of beers of the highest possible quality.

About Sierra Nevada Brewery

Ken Grossman was a wild card from the get-go.

As a toddler, he took things apart faster than his mom could keep up—the toaster, the washer, outlet covers. Tinkering turned into inventing, and learning in school didn’t compare to education in a backyard shop. Ken fell for science, though, thanks to the father of a close friend. Visiting their house, Ken always saw and smelled curious bubbling jugs: homebrew.

Weihenstephan Beers:

Kristal Weissbier / Crystal Wheat Beer

In our golden-yellow crystal-clear wheat beer the fresh citrus flavour harmonises very well with spicy banana notes. The fine sparkling gives it a tangy and animated appearance. Throughout summer and winter, it’s a prickling experience. It goes well with fish, seafood, white meat or it can be enjoyed as an aperitif. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Hefeweissbier Dunkel / Dark Wheat Beer

Our dark wheat beer is impressive with its creamy white foam. A fruity-fresh sweetness and hints of mature bananas harmonise with delicious flavours of roasted malt, sparkling and full-bodied with a light caramel taste on the first sip. An excellent accompaniment from hearty meals and game to chocolate and nut desserts. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Hefe Weissbier / Wheat Beer

Our amber wheat beer, with its fine-poured white foam, smells of cloves and impresses consumers with its refreshing banana flavour. It is full bodied and with a smooth yeast taste. To be enjoyed at any time, goes excellently with fish and seafood, with spicy cheese and especially with the traditional Bavarian veal sausage. Brewed according to our centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill.

Sierra Nevada Beers:

Pale Ale

Heavy on hops, that was always the brewery plan. So in 1980, we loaded Pale Ale up with Cascade—a new hop at the time named after the mountain range—and the intense aromas of pine and citrus sparked the American craft beer revolution.

Original Extra IPA Torpedo

It started as a napkin sketch in a pub, an idea for a device that could boost hop aroma without adding more bitterness. We built the sketch, and the “Hop Torpedo” revolutionized dry hopping and inspired Torpedo Extra IPA. It’s an aggressive yet balanced beer featuring the complex citrus, pine, and herbal character of whole-cone hops.
