About Babo Wines

Shortly after departing the wine shores of Australia and equipped with over 25 years of industry experience between them, Justin and his blood-brothers, Luke and Paul, embarked on a world tour in search of fine wine and food. Like Justin, Paul & Luke ended up in Italy, where passion for wine and food is unrivalled. They appreciated immediately what the Australian market was lacking: an outstanding selection of Italian wine. Chianti was the region which inspired their partnership and the boys set about producing wines that were distinctly varietal, reflecting their origins.

The boys sourced the highest quality fruit from the finest wine regions, selecting vineyards with great exposure that historically produced great fruit. The BABO wines are brought to life at a boutique winery in the heart of Chianti. All the fruit is handled with the utmost care to maintain and preserve the fresh fruit characters. BABO is all about maximizing the expression of varietal character.

The name BABO is an Italian wine making term, referring to the measurement of Baume.

Wines being featured:

2018 Pinot Grigio
The colour is slightly deeper than the 2017 vintage due to more skin contact. Straw coloured nose is a little muted initially but then opens to pear, grilled nuts and subtle floral nuance. The palate is medium weight with texture the main calling card. The skin contact has accentuated mouthfeel where it spreads across the palate. Pear and green melon the main characters. Textural – grippy Pinot Grigio!!!

2016 Sangiovese Toscana
As seems to be the norm for the 2016 vintage this sangiovese has a strong deep colour. The nose is quite deep and concentrated also with morello cherry and blistered cherry but pleasantly also notes of fennel and lavender. Certainly a more aromatic vintage. Palate shows that northern chianti classico breadth and width with latent fruit power. Darker cherries, truffled notes and savoury detail build around the tannin/acid matrix. Fashionably late tannins leave no doubt that this a wonderful Tuscan vintage. Very similar to the much lauded 2006.

2017 Chanti DOCG
Aromatic cherry and blueberry immediately then the palate shows juicy cherry and darker fruits. Light of weight through the mouth with fine ‘al dente’ tannin and pitch perfect acidity.
