During the profit downgrades, financial write downs and the resignation of the CEO over Foster's wine business I heard one financial analyst say that wine businesses in Australia were better run by families. He must have been thinking about Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery. They do it all and they do it well, they have a large vine nursery supplying themselves and the industry. They have vineyards in diverse regions such as Barossa, Eden Valley, Coonawarra and Riverland. They have their own cooperage and both traditional and state of the art wineries. Most importantly though they seem to understand the fundamental relationship between people, place and wine that just gets lost on people who don't go to work among the vines.
This wine is great example of how well we can make Tempranillo in Australia and at 13.5% it's the perfect red to drink in the warmer weather because it delivers plenty of mouth-filling flavour and great texture from a lighter-bodied wine. It's full of strawberries, roses, spice and liquorice with superb balance.
